With multiple Grammy wins and multiple nominations at the Academy Awards, it’s safe to say that R&B artist Mary J. Blige is a one of a kind performer.
However, the road to where she is today was filled with numerous challenges for the now-48-year-old singer, from years-long struggles with substance abuse to the dissolution of her marriage.
Still, she stands triumphant over these struggles and enjoys a thriving music career until today. This is how she keeps up with her busy schedule while taking care of herself.
In an interview for the cover of Self magazine, Blige shared the main things included in her self-care routine.
As she revealed, her process always needs to begin with building herself up from the inside. She does this by beginning with a prayer and shares how the ‘first fruits’ of her day need to go to God.
The second important part of her routine is diet. Throughout the day, Blige makes sure she eats as healthy as possible and loads up on foods like salads and fish. There’s also her post-workout protein shake.
In the end, though, she considers water and prayer to be the most vital things for her well-being. According to the ‘No More Drama‘ singer, she makes sure to drink a lot of water daily and actually downs half a gallon of it while at the gym. Meanwhile, prayer allows her to stay conscious of who she really is.
In the same interview, Blige was asked about the possibility of her being a mother. To this, the singer replied that she is focused on ‘mothering herself’ at the moment.
While she loves her family and cares about other people, she said that she needs to think about herself, too. It’s worth noting though that Blige was stepmother for many years to her ex-husband Kendu Isaacs’ three children from a previous relationship.
Her current peace of mind is hard-earned though. Just a few years ago, she divorced Isaacs, who is also her former manager, because of his alleged infidelity. The proceedings opened up financial disputes with her ex even reportedly asking for spousal support amounting to a whopping $130,000 a month.
But that’s not where her struggles stop. Throughout her career, Blige has dealt with issues like depression, alcoholism, and substance abuse as well.
Speaking about her childhood, she revealed that her problems with addiction stemmed from a traumatic experience she had when she was young. According to the star, she ended up using alcohol and other addictive substances to cope with the event as she entered into adulthood.
Her wake up call came with the sudden and tragic death of fellow musician Whitney Houston several years ago. Looking at the late ‘I Will Always Love You’ singer’s situation, Blige noticed similarities between them. These then motivated her to overcome her own addictions and change her life for the better.
