A celebrity’s life may seem all glitz and glamor but celebrities who are truly dedicated to their craft do whatever it takes to bring justice to the portrayal.
It sheds light on how stars are willing to go great lengths for their projects. In the name of art, actors lose or gain significant weight, oftentimes smashing healthy advice of experts. Here are some of them:
Renee Zellweger – ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’
To play the titular character, the slim Renee Zellweger gained 30 pounds by devouring everything yummy: pizza, milkshakes, burgers, and even candy bars. She made sure to consume a total of 4,000 calories per day, which is intense, to say the least. However, it may be worth it because she got an Oscar nod for her effective portrayal, plus, she shed the weight after the shooting finalized.
However, for her recurring role in the sequel, 2004’s “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason,” Renee put on weight again, making her from a size 4 to a size 14!
For the 2016 installment, “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” the multiaward-winning actress offered to pack pounds once more, but this time, the director Sharon Maguire was the one who told her not to do it because they will depict that the character had achieved her goal weight but that her life was still far from perfect.
Anne Hathaway – ‘Les Miserables’
Anna Hathaway snatched an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for playing Fantine, a tuberculosis-afflicted woman, in the 2012 film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Les Miserables.”
She lost 25 pounds for the character – 15 during the shooting and 10 before the production. In an interview, the 36-year-old revealed that she relied on just two squares of oatmeal paste daily, a diet which she later on acknowledged as a bit too much.
Tom Hanks – ‘Cast Away’
Versatile actor Tom Hanks, who has appeared in different genres of films, played his part very convincingly as a FedEx official who got stranded in an island after his plane crashes. The story revolved around how the lead character was available to fend off for himself on a deserted island for years, making himself comfortable along the way.
As someone who was left with little to no resources, you won’t expect to see a normal-weighing man, so the actor shed off a whopping 50 pounds for it! Tom had previously done this and gained weight in the past, which might have contributed to the diagnosis of his type 2 diabetes, he revealed in an interview.
Jared Leto – ‘Chapter 27’
Like Tom, Jared Leto loses and gains weight if he sees it fit for a storyline. For 2007’s biographical drama “Chapter 27,” he reportedly added 60 pounds to look like the killer of John Lennon. To do this, the actor revealed he forced himself to reach his weight goal and binge-eat. This caused some adverse effects like pain on his foot.
