Oprah Winfrey is basically an open book – from her tragic past to her struggles, she has shared these all to her fans, which has made her all the more what she is today and may probably be the reason so many people look up to her.
She’s also like an average Jane or Joe, who deals with the problem of losing weight, but more than the fact that she wanted to lower the number on the weighing scale, the influential personality has also divulged that she had to shed pounds because of a health condition.
The 65-year-old recently wrote a letter to Weight Watchers members wherein she revealed that she was pre-diabetic, stemming from high blood sugar levels and high blood pressure, before joining the program a couple of years ago. We have always heard of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, but what was Oprah’s condition?
This refers to the condition where the level of sugar in your blood is higher than it should be but still not high enough to be considered as type 2 diabetes. Although being prediabetic doesn’t necessarily mean you are in grave danger, you’re heading in the wrong direction because it is a precursor to type 2 diabetes.
Ninety percent of the 84 million Americans who suffer from this are not aware they have it, which means they also don’t know that they are at risk of becoming a type 2 diabetic patient.
Oprah’s mother, Vernita, had type 2 diabetes. She died in November at 83. This type of ailment happens when your body doesn’t make use of insulin properly even though they produce the hormone. This life-long condition is more common than type 1, wherein the body doesn’t produce insulin.
Symptoms and Treatment
