If you find yourself deleting social media apps from your phone every now and then, simply because you are spending too much time on them while realizing that they are not adding any real value to your quality of life, rather making you more depressed than ever, then singer Selena Gomez knows exactly how you feel because reportedly she does the same.
According to a recent revelation made by the singer, although she is a somewhat active social media user on Instagram and enjoys a handsome following, she still finds the platform to be very depressive and having a negative impact on her sense of self-esteem, and that is why, to provide herself with a necessary break from it, she has developed a habit of uninstalling it from time to time.
Not Making Her Feel Too Good About Herself
While speaking with Kelly Ripa as well as Ryan Seacrest on a show, Gomez made the shocking revelation that usage of the platform had made her very conscious of the way her body looked, making her feel like she wasn’t as good looking as she needed to be in order to maintain her public image.
This sense of doubt in her own appearance made her feel bad about her own self, according to the singer.
There are hardly a handful of people that have more followers than Gomez, as she is currently being followed by around 152 million Instagram users on the platform.
During her interview, Gomez also revealed that she was not using the application as much as she used to in the past since now she has realized the negative impact it has on her lifestyle.
An Unhealthy Medium?
Gomez also commented on the unhealthy way young people are using the platform in a way that it has become an unhealthy addiction, craving for likes and views after every post and trying to seek the public’s approval, becoming emotionally damaged in the process if either such approval does not come or people pour in with harsh criticism.
This is not the first time that Gomez has been vocal about her fear that social media could be harming the young generation.
According to a statement she gave at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Gomez highlighted that although social media has arguably added a lot of value to our life, the way it is being used by the youth should raise concern especially pertaining to how it would affect them in the long run.
She also brought attention to the easy spread of fake news on social media platforms and highlighted how readily the youth is willing to accept it as fact.
Gomez also confessed that her obsession with the comments section of her Instagram has created a lot of negativity in her life, especially after internet trolls had started posting negative statements on her posts. It makes her extremely self-conscious and, as a remedy, she now deletes the app at least once every week to allow herself some space to cleanse her soul of all the accumulated negativity.
