With walking almost feeling like second nature, it can be taken for granted by some. Well, that is, until the ability becomes hampered by pain in one’s feet. Unfortunately, most people don’t really pay attention to their feet until they feel that something is wrong with it.
If you’re one of the many people who are suffering from various foot pains, one of the following may be the reason for your dilemma.
A Bad Case of Bunions
Bunions are those painful and firm bumps that develop around the area of one’s big toe. They are the result of a person’s prolonged wearing of shoes that are too tight for their foot size or width.
To fix this issue, people are recommended by experts to switch to wearing shoes that have a wider toe box. Wearing inserts and padding will also help with the pain.
Plantar Fasciitis
Another condition that might be causing foot pain is plantar fasciitis. Foot ache caused by this issue is centered around the heel area, which typically becomes inflamed.
It is reportedly the most common problem that middle-aged patients have, according to podiatrist Jeffrey A. Oster. Massaging and stretching one’s calves and feet can alleviate the pain it causes.
Being Flatfooted
Some people are born with flatfeet while some lose their arches later in life due to physical trauma.
The condition also makes its sufferers more prone to developing other foot problems like bunions and plantar fasciitis. To correct this issue, flatfooted individuals are advised to wear shoes that force their feet to form an arch when they walk
Achilles Tendonitis
Achilles tendonitis occurs when the Achilles’ tendon, the band of fibrous tissue found near the heels becomes irritated or inflamed because of overuse. Both runners and frequent high heel wearers are more prone to getting this condition.
Once symptoms show, people are advised to avoid physical activities that cause further strain on the body part for as little as a week up to a month. Icing the area is also recommended as well as taking medication like Advil to mitigate discomfort and inflammation.
Arthritis-Induced Inflammation
Aging people can probably point to arthritis as the culprit behind their foot pain. The condition is a result of the wearing out of the bones’ cartilage, which happens over time. It can also occur after one suffers from physical injuries like sprains or broken bones. Fortunately, there are plenty of treatment options available for arthritis patients.
Aside from switching to orthotics, people can opt to take steroid injections as well as anti-pain medications. At the end of the day though, the treatment will depend on the severity of one’s arthritis symptoms.
