The year 2012 was a sad one for Gossip Girl fans as the hit TV show had concluded after a lengthy run. It was also very shocking when the identity of Gossip Girl was revealed, although, in hindsight, it did make a lot of sense.
But now, HBO Max has announced that the show would be making a comeback on its platform, with episodes having a duration of one hour, each, and the first season having a total of ten episodes.
But the most pressing question has to be this: would any of the original cast members be making a comeback?
Although it’s unlikely since towards the end of the original series their characters were no longer teenagers, and Gossip Girl was essentially a teen drama surrounding high school students, there is still one voice that may be retained from the original series, that of Kristen Bell.
It’s A Maybe
If you have watched even a single episode of the Gossip Girl TV show, then you should know that the voice of Gossip Girl which kick-starts almost every episode of the show is that of actress Kristen Bell.
Fans of the show already know this, and when the show was still airing, many had wondered whether Bell would be making an appearance on the show. But since that didn’t happen, Bell remained the official narrator of the show which people grew to love.
Now, with this new series, it would be strange if Bell is not included as the narrator since her voice has become iconic, almost synonymous with the series. When asked whether there is a possibility we would get to hear her voice on the new series, Bell gave a very ambiguous answer and hinted that there might be a slight chance. However, she also made it clear that she would not be revealing any such secret if one existed at all.
According to an interview given by the actress, she believes that perhaps James Earl Jones would be a good replacement for a person to voice the narration in her stead if she was not being considered for the job.
The Story
In order to maintain the sanctity of the original story, the show creators have steered clear of the original plotline and went for a time eight years into the future.
The setting would still be New York, and the story would still revolve around teens who attend private schools. However, the original website would most likely not be making a comeback thanks to the advent and extreme penetration of social media in young lives.
Fans of the show would definitely get to witness a stark contrast between the way social lives were being reported in the original series and how such information is disseminated in the new series thanks to technological advancements.
What remains to be seen is whether any of the original cast would make surprise appearances on the show, although, according to Leighton Meester, who played the character of Blair Waldorf on the original series, she has not been approached with any such proposition as of yet.
