Actress Demi Moore ruled the silver screen in the 1990s with films like ‘Ghost’, ‘Disclosure’, and ‘Indecent Proposal’. Looking at the beautiful young star at the time, one wouldn’t think that she was actually going through serious issues with her body image. She now reveals these struggles in her new memoir, ‘Inside Out’.

Secret Addiction

Moore’s memoir hit the books stands in late September

While most actresses care for their appearance as part of their job, Moore admitted that she went to extremes to maintain her physique.

According to the now 56-year-old star, she was addicted to over exercising for years and developed disordered eating habits at the same time. Moore revealed that her obsession started when she was training for a role in the film ‘A Few Good Men’ where she portrayed a naval lawyer.

Having just given birth to her daughter Scout Willis, she wanted to lose the extra weight she gained during the pregnancy. What more, she had to fit in the military uniform her character wore in the film. While she succeeded in delivering for the movie, it came at a cost.

Because she was exercising excessively, the star was not able to produce breast milk with enough fat for her then-infant daughter. Despite being ‘crushed’ by this, Moore admitted that she still continued her exercise habits.

Five-Year Ordeal

Training for her film ‘GI Jane’ reportedly helped Moore to break free from her eating disorder

As the mother of three further detailed, her body image issues and obsession with working out continued on for years. In fact, these habits followed her in her other film endeavors at the height of her acting career. For her next film ‘Indecent Proposal’, the star sought to lose some weight once again for her role.

She reveals that all she could think about at the time was her body and how she will be on display again for the film. Thus, Moore pushed herself once more cutting all carbs from her diet and ‘working out on every machine imaginable’.

After easing up on herself for a while due to an illness, her disordered eating continued onto other films. At one point, all she ate for the day was a half-cup of oatmeal, some protein and vegetables. Looking back, she admits how crazy eating disorders are. Still, she believes that this didn’t make her sickness less real.

Demi’s Epiphany

After needing to bulk up for an action movie role, the actress reached her limit and realized how she needed to just be her natural size. Moore said that her ‘epiphany’ happened when she was taking a shower in her Idaho home.

In her book, she also talked about how meditation helped her make peace with herself and realize that she couldn’t keep on fighting her own body.
